The Perfect Tree
“Amos,” Mama said as she straightened his coat, “I have to stay with the baby. So, it’s your job to find us the perfect tree. And, don't forget to look after your sister.”
Amos grinned. He wouldn’t let Mama down. Grabbing Amelia’s hand, Amos tugged his sister along to catch up with their dad.
“How about this one, Dad?”
Dad shakes his head, “It has a hole.”
Releasing Amelia’s hand, Amos points, “That one?”
“Too many brown needles.” Dad calls as he crossed to another row.
Amos nods then scans the trees.
Wait. Where was Amelia?
Amos spins. “Amelia!”
A giggle comes from several rows over. Amos trots toward the sound. No Amelia.
There, was that the pink of her jacket?
A tractor filled with people chugs into Amos’ path. He skids to a halt. Merry chatter fills the air. But no sign of Amelia. Swerving around, Amos continues searching.
Row after row, no little sister. His heart gallops faster than his feet. What if he can’t find her?
Suddenly, branches to his right rustle. Purple polka-dotted boots peek out from under the needles.
Amos dashes over. He pulls Amelia out of her hiding place just as Dad runs up.
“Amos! Amelia! You two can’t-” Dad pauses, looking behind them. “It’s perfect, guys! You found our tree.”
Amelia just giggles. But Amos steps back and looks. It really was a beautiful tree. The best part? He and Amelia had found it...together. Mama was going to be so proud.
