SPRING FLING ENTRY 2024
ELIZABETH VOLKMANN (123 WORDS)

CITY SIDEWALK

Winter went -
and left Spring
to struggle
in a muddy puddle
of melting snow.

Hunched under
cloudy skies,
people grumbled
and wondered
whether Spring
had even arrived
at all.

But Sylvie -
watching from her window -
knew.

In red rubber boots
and a sweater,
warm as sunshine,
Sylvie dashed
and
splashed
through the muddy puddles -

and from her pockets
pulled
half-filled packets
of forgotten seeds,
now remembered.

Above steel-grey cement
Sylvie bent -
and between the cracks,
still wet
with melted snow,
she planted
a promise
to prove
that Spring
had truly arrived
after all.

Before long
and none too soon,
stems sprouted,
flowers bloomed -

and the beauty of it all
left the people
to wonder -
Who?

And only Sylvie -
watching from her window -
knew.

SPRING OF HOPE

Ten years old on an ATV,
Rumbling free, ALIVE!
But not a match against the curve,
Lucky to survive.

I learned to wheel myself around
While many friendships dwindled.
My heart hung lowest in the night,
But then my soul rekindled.

A spring hatched frame of feathers came
And raised me from the haze.
He perched upon my shoulder
And helped me through my maize.

Patches asked for nothing back
‘cept skritches on his neck.
My hands work fine so I complied
My nights now far from wreck.

I gave him water, seed, and greens.
He whistled Yankee doodle.
Normal seemed much closer now.
At lunch we'd share a noodle.

He bridged me back, with beak to cheek.
I even learned to drive.
From mope to cope to Spring of hope,
Rumbling free, ALIVE!

As spring approached, March couldn’t decide what to do.

It didn’t want to let go of February, with its early nights and whispered snowstorms. But it also longed to join April, with its flood of flowers squinting at the sun.

April beckoned. “Come on! We’ll stay up late, ride my breeze, and dance in my sun showers.”

But February held on. “Stay with me,” it said. “We’ll hide and play under my downy white covers. Just us.”

March cuddled with February a while longer. Soon though, like every year, impatient stems poked through the snow and drowsy bears stretched out of caves.

“See you soon,” March said, gently tucking February in.

April was waiting with a mischievous grin.

“Ready?” it asked.

March shook off the branches left by winter’s winds. “Let’s go,” it said, twirling through cheering daffodils, headlong into spring.

Blossoms burst under the dancing morning light.
Stretching and glistening, Dandi reached towards the sun.
The moment she’d been waiting for.
Her leaves spread out, prepared for the change.
A gentle breeze filled her with anticipation.
Gray clouded her optimism, casting a gloomy shadow over her.
Rain fell, dreams shattered.
Dandi trembled in the cold.
No escape. Their blossoms surrounded her.
Envy crept in stealthily like a choking weed, but she released it. “You are beautiful,” she roared, inhaling their fragrance.
Another morning sun rekindled hope.
Was it her time now?
Sunlight transformed Dandi into a magnificent flower.
Vibrant yellow extended across the landscape.
A fleeting moment filled with joy.
As days went by, Dandi’s bright color faded into delicate pappus.
Thunderous footsteps shook the ground, rattling her stem.
Tiny hands plucked her from the earth.

Why are you feeding him? He does NOT know where your hands have been. Have you washed your hands? Go back and do it again!

You just scratched my goat ears. Would you like me to pet you with my hooves?

Wait. What is this? “Goat yoga?” You’re getting down on all fours. Oh wow, you’re moving into different positions. It’s like having a new playground every few minutes. How exciting for me and my friends!

Is this what a petting zoo is like for you? Is it this fun? Well, I guess that’s worth doing then.

All right, who decided to drop feed in my pin? I can’t believe the mess humans make.

“Denny, stop watering the flowers,” his mother scolded. “It’s time for the tournament.”

Denny dragged his droopy tail to the field where the other T-Rexes prepared for competition.

Roar! Smash! Slam! They bellowed and bashed, trying to be the toughest in the pack.

Denny’s turn arrived, and he stomped loudly onto the field. He bared his sharp teeth and slashed his scary claws. But then he caught a glimpse of his clomping feet and the flowers that wilted under his weight.

Poor little petals, he thought. Then he left the field, knowing that he didn’t want to be a dangerous dinosaur like all the rest.

When the awards were announced, Denny returned with a colorful trophy for each winner: three potted plants that he’d proudly grown all on his own.

Denny didn’t need to have the biggest bite. He won first place for biggest heart.

The Picture Day Sneeze!

On picture day we went outside,
to stand beneath the trees.
It would have made a nice picture,
but suddenly I sneezed!

I really tried to hold it in,
I tried my best… ‘say cheese!’
But though I tried with all my might,
I couldn’t help but sneeze.

It made my classmates laugh and snort,
it made my teacher freeze.
I really think I tried my best,
but pollen makes me sneeze.

The second time we tried again,
I focused on the bees.
But even though I really tried,
out came another sneeze.

So back inside we all went in,
to take a different shot.
One without the floating pollen,
the cause of all my snot.

I like to think I tried my best,
I hope you think so, too.
Next spring i'll try a little more
I really will, “ACHOO!”

I Was An Umbrella

I’m not a lot of things anymore. Mostly a forgotten curiosity and a home for scratch-marked, forbidden art.

But I’ve been a lot of things.

A call home,

a superhero changing room,

a prop in a movie about old stuff,

and a place where smooches sometimes happen (ew).

But the best thing I ever was

was an umbrella.

When the springtime storm cloud rolled in, it rolled hard.

She had wet shoes,
a quarter,
and a need for some shelter.

I had a roof and a door,
I had mom on the other line,
and
I had safety, only for a moment.

I may not be a lot of things anymore,
But for that moment, I felt like a superhero.

The first day of spring
at Hare and Snail Salon
is busy, busy, busy!
Let’s see what’s going on!

Marmot’s fur is matted,
needing thorough combing.
Fox is getting full shampoo,
lathering and foaming.

Turtle’s shell is bumpy,
in desperate need of wax.
Skunk’s getting massaged.
She’s just here to relax!

In the midst of chaos,
Rabbit enters in a whirl.
“My tail is way too frizzy,
my ears could use a curl!”

Rabbit, in her hurry,
knocks over Slug’s new shell.
It shatters on the floor,
Slug begins to cry and yell!

Rabbit turns to leave,
feeling rather terrible.
Wise old Owl remarks,
“Everything’s repairable!”

"In this season of spring,
focus and renew,
not in how you look,
on what you say and do!"

Slug says to Rabbit,
“Please, friend, dry your tears!
After all, it's just a shell.
Now, how about those ears?”

I don't have a blog, so here is my entry. (70-words)

Tale of a New Tail

Wiggle, jiggle, wriggle,
Through dewy grass and gooey mud.
No footprints, hoofprints, pawprints,
I leave only squiggly trails of slime.
Frog and Mole are hunting,
And Robin’s beak is poking.
A snap, a snip, a swallow,
My twisty tail is Robin’s lunch.
I’m shorter now, and faster,
Zooming to the garden.
A place to hide while working,
Sifting soil, scattering nutrients.
Wiggle, jiggle, wriggle,
Growing new plants - and a new tail.

Wintertime brings metal-chilling cold, but luckily, I’m stuffed with warm well-wishes–
family photos, letters, even five dollars from Grandma!
I swell with pride…
some junk too.

Junk mail tastes delicious,
but it gives me a post-office-sized box ache.
So, I focus on the season’s greetings instead.

Soon comes new year’s cheer!
Declared resolutions and money-saving coupons fill me to the brim.
Mailboxes love holding hope.

February gets my stamp of approval,
as valentines line my insides with glitter, candy hearts and be-mines.

But now I’m chilly and hollow again.

Sigh…

Oh, wait.

That’s nice.

That sunray, toasting my tin top…

And the sweet little rain shower, removing a pesky plop of bird poop.

Oh! The mail carrier!

I’m opening WIDE!

What’s this?!

Bunnies and chicks in tiny baskets?
Yes please!
Miniature boxes of jellybeans?
YUM.
And look!
Tulips at my feet?!

Oh, my happy hinges!
SPRING!

The Bee’s Sneeze

Ahh, spring. The first show of emerald, bountiful blooms,

and… "ACHOOO!” Allergies. “Not again,” Buford the Bee

lamented.

This happened each Spring. Buford could not enjoy flowers

without sneezing or breaking into hives.

The other bees hummed as they worked, zipping between zinnias,

petunias, and daffodils.

Buford did not join in. He skulked behind a statuesque flamingo

and pretended to pollinate a row of artificial tulips.

"AHH-AHH-AHH-CHOO!" caught Buford’s attention. In the next

yard, a woman named Agatha tossed carnations into the green

bin. “These just won’t do,” she complained.

Agatha carried a gallon of new hydrangeas to her

garden bed, inhaling their aroma. “Much better!” she approved.

Buford floated closer. No sneezing or hives.

"Allergy Friendly," noted the tag on the hydrangea container.

Buford couldn’t read, but anticipated his best spring yet!

Everywhere I go, I hear the same thing.

Spring has most definitely NOT sprung. I’m still as coiled and tight as ever.

OPENING DAY

Spring is here! It’s baseball opening day!
I’ve been waiting all my life to play on a T-ball team!
Cap on, bat in hand, I race from the pond to the field. But, wait. There’s a sign on the fence: FIELDS CLOSED, TOO WET. Gee whiz.
I wait, and wait . . .
Finally, opening day. I’m so excited! Wearing my yellow DUCKS team shirt, and with my baseball hat snug on my head, I stride with pride toward the field.
Standing on home plate for the first time my knees wobble and my bat shakes.
Strike 1 is called. I tremble.
Ball 1 is called. Then I hit the ball down the 1st base line and I’m tagged out.
T-ball is a fun game, but webbed feet on a field is hard. I’ll stick to playing ball in the spring pond with my duck friends.

“Spring is late,” announced Groundhog, poking his head aboveground.
He wasn’t talking to himself.
Winter was there, still sipping her tea. Suitcase unpacked.

“Don’t mind me,” lingered Winter. “I’ll wait!”

Groundhog grumbled, “I won’t last six more weeks.”

Saliba was finally going to win the egg tap this year. She could feel it.

In the weeks before Easter, she perfected her technique.

Come Holy Saturday, Saliba was filled with confidence (and hard-boiled eggs) when she crawled into bed.

SAKURA'S PROMISE

In a hidden corner of the world, embraced by gentle mountains, stood Sakura.

The forest buzzed with life, drawn to her blush-hued canopy. Among them, young Miko visited daily. As each petal floated down like soft rain, she asked “Why must your beauty vanish so fast?”

Gnorman and the Frog

Gnorman was not happy to see this frog. After a long winter in the shed, Gnorman was back in his garden, excited for a new Spring. Nights were chilly but his beard and hat kept him warm. The ground smelled of wet, thawing earth. Everything was just as Gnorman liked it. Everything except the frog.

The frog sat in Gnorman’s favorite spot, staring blankly at the scowling gnome. Gnorman glared at the frog. It didn’t move. The gnome felt his frustration rising. This frog wasn’t part of how he liked things.

A horsefly circled Gnorman’s hat and landed on his angry gnome nose. It was very itchy, but he was made of concrete so couldn’t shoo it away. He was very uncomfortable.

Splat! Something sticky hit Gnorman’s nose. Suddenly the fly was gone! Crunch-crunch-crunch… The frog munched on the fly, still staring at Gnorman. Maybe the frog wasn’t so bad.

The Grass is Greener on the Other Side

Lush green grass,
and flowers bloomed,
Easter bunnies and peacocks groomed.
It was spring!
Everyone was happy, except, for one donkey.
Heavy hearted,
Sprained back,
and burned by toil,
he grazed and wondered with a sigh,
"Perhaps, the grass must be greener on the other side."

To escape, he disguised as a flower and hoped for delight…
Until…
thorns prickled,
bees stung,
and pollens trickled his nose. SNEEZE!

Next, as an Easter bunny, he hopped with glee…
Until… he felt dizzy from…
too many hugs,
endless pictures,
and countless eggs to hide. THUD!

Lastly, he joined a peacock flock craving for admiration and beauty…
Until...
he drenched in rain,
got sick of dancing his feathers off,
and witnessed a tiger’s threat. PHEW!

He trotted back through the forest,
over the mountains,
across the field...
until...
he reached home.
Just being himself!

The Adventures of Dewey the Bunny!

Dewey was eating a cookie when Kelley yanked him away from the orphanage.
“I’m adopting you,” she said.
“How nice!” he said.

Dewey weeded until he collapsed. “Can I take a break now?”
“Take 15 min.,"Kelley said. Later, she snored and dropped her wand. He ran over to take her wand.

“Back to the orphanage.”
He waved his wand as he pointed it at himself. No magic came out. He bolted with it.

His tummy growled and Teddy, the bear, gave him an ice cream cone from his cart. Dewey licked some and bought a potion from Teddy.
Kelley appeared with another wand. “You’re coming home.”
“She’s evil,” said Dewey, as broke her wand and he poured a potion on her.
“What happened today?” she asked.

“I’m nearly done with the paperwork to adopt you,” said Teddy.
Dewey grinned and hugged him. Teddy hugged back.

Dear Spring,

It's recess and I'm stuck writing a letter.
See, it's totally not my fault.
My pig, Bacon, ate my homework.
Really, she did!

I turned in the shredded pieces. But, Ms. Sanders is making me redo it.

I am lying under my favorite tree trying to write.
The wind is whirling softly.
I feel a gentle breeze.
The sun is beaming brightly.
Flowers are budding.
Birds are merrily chirping...

Uuuggghhh, I should be chasing the clouds on a swing. Maybe, I could do the bunny with our class pet. Possibly, I could play sharks and minnows with my friends.

I know what would be perfect!

Memories of Grandma’s garden
Fill my heart with love
Give me hope and happiness
Still, from up above.

Every single Easter
We’d travel in our car
To Grandma’s house, our refuge,
Although it was so far.

The Easter I remember best
Our family was in mourning
Our brother, son and grandson
Had left us without warning.

Grandma, wise in many ways,
So gentle and so kind
Wrapped her hand around my own
Saw sadness in my mind.

Walked me to her garden
Full of springtime flowers
Shared with me some special thoughts
‘Bout plants, sunshine and showers.

“Seeds are planted in the earth
We watch them as they grow
They spread their beauty everywhere
Until it’s time to go.

We are like flowers
We all have our season
We share love with others
That gives our lives reason.”

Nickname: April
Full Name: April Showers

April arrives with a spring in her step.
“She’s really blossomed since the winter tryouts,” the judges whisper.
April stomps in her rain boots, twirling her umbrella like a baton.
Ribbons from her flower crown trail behind her.

Contestant #2
Nickname: Rue
Full Name: February W.

February shuffles up in her snow boots.
“Get those knees up, Rue!” the judges shout.
But Rue doesn’t move. She freezes.
Maybe she can’t hear them with her earmuffs on.

Rue sits back down on the sidelines and molds a snowball in her hands.
(She likes to save one last snowball for the spring parade, to throw when no one expects it.)

It’s time to announce who will be in the Spring Fling Parade.
My friends check the list.

Will February march?
No, but April may!

Grammy’s Garden

Grammy loved to garden. Every spring, I sat by her side. We planted seeds and watched them grow.

Grammy died in November. Snow covered plants. Nothing grew.

Snow still blankets the ground this spring. Grammy would start seeds inside. Instead, Mommy and I clean the shed.

Who will plant the garden?

“Mommy, I miss Grammy,” I cry.
“It’s okay to feel sad,” Mommy hugs me.

I breathe. Then I see Grammy’s hat hanging next to mine.

“Mommy, can we plant the garden?” I give her Grammy’s hat.

Mommy and I smooth cool dirt. We lower each seed with love into its earthy home.

When sprouts emerge, my happy tears help water.

I play with worms in mud. Snap peas crunch and sweet strawberries squish. Sunflowers share my smile.

Grammy loved to garden and so do I. Our love lasts in memories, in new sprouts, and in my future gardens.

Easter Egg Hunt & Nepali New Year (150 words)

Kriti receives her dream invite to organize the Easter Egg Hunt for her class.
But, it’s the same day as the Nepali New Year.
Her heart races.
Her Mamu throws great New Year’s celebrations. And, she CAN’T miss the Egg Hunt.
She tosses and turns all night, then wakes with a solution.
“Mamu, how about a Red-themed Egg Hunt- New Year Combo?”
“Hmmm…"
“Just imagine, my class in our celebration,” adds Kriti.
“Oh, Nice!” Mamu agrees. “But, only if your teacher approves.”
Kriti plans- A treasure map, costume ideas and crucially bonus Nepali food and music.
She clasps together her sweaty hands while she presents her idea in class.
A long silence...
And then…
Applause!
On the special day, Kriti’s family and friends celebrate Easter and the new year, their quest for togetherness. They enjoy delicious Samay Baji and the rhythm of Resham Phiriri as they hunt for red eggs.

Scorching sun, and the occasional scorpion skittering by.

Until…
Lightning jags, and thunder rolls clouds like boulders in the sky

And then..
Delicate desert lilies come first. Silver-blue buds blossom into white, bright stars.

Soft-haired, sticky purple carpets of desert sand verbena burst forth, sprinkled with yellow desert sunflowers—golden disks with tufty orange centers.

Teddy-bear cholla reach out to their neighbors – yellow-green blooms atop their fuzzy arms.

Hummingbirds, cactus wrens, northern mockingbirds, and bees gather for pollination parties. Buzzing and singing fills the early-morning crevices, as dawn light streams down the red-rock hillsides.

Spring here is fast and urgent, like a flash flood surging down deep canyon walls.

Because just like the water, spring will dribble and dry, soaking back into the ancient earth, evaporating from the sun-soaked highways, yielding to summer.

Morning shines on my delightful garden

and I run to greet the critters there

to ask if they can help me count!

One beautiful bluebird comes

to dance with me in the sun

while two playful rabbits

find me two tasty carrots.

Three tiny ladybugs

cling to three vibrant leaves

as we watch four lively spiders

make four silky webs.

The afternoon sun shines high

as I meet five bustling bumble bees

buzzing in five honey hives.

Working below them, six busy ants

march up six sturdy anthills

while seven graceful butterflies

sail by seven blooming flowers.

The light starts to fade and I discover

eight charming squirrels

eating eight delectable acorns.

Next to them nine fuzzy caterpillars

The sun slips down fully

and in the velvety dark,

I glimpse ten glowing fireflies

THE LEGEND OF A CROCUS

Winter drew an icy breath. “I think I’ll stay longer.”
Spring was ready but Winter stood its ground. “Only after the first sign of Spring, will I go.”
A tiny voice came from somewhere deep below, “Can I help?”
Spring replied, “We need something mighty. Wake up, bear!”
But Winter’s frigid winds trapped the bear in his den.
Spring commanded, “Burst forth, birch tree!”
But no leaf could escape Winter’s icy cocoon.
“Awaken, grass!” Spring bellowed.
But the grass slept under Winter’s snow blanket.
The little voice said, “I can do it. I’ve soaked in every sunbeam I could.”
Then, a crocus pushed out from the softening earth. It stretched its petals and welcomed Spring.
“You’ve won,” conceded Winter. “I take my leave. Have a glorious Spring.”

The Snail Who Soared

Snail slept all day. Butterfly slept all night. But during orange sherbet sunsets, they became friends.

One evening, after a long flight, Butterfly settled to rest as Snail awoke.

“Is flying wonderful?” asked Snail.

“Exhausting,” yawned Butterfly.

“I wish I could soar,” murmured Snail.

That night, Snail willed his shell to sprout wings, to no avail. At dawn, his cries woke Butterfly.

“I’ll never fly.” Snail collapsed asleep in a pile of silvery slime and tears.

Butterfly sighed sadly.

At day’s end, as Snail stirred awake, Butterfly landed nearby. “Tonight, climb the branches of the tallest tree, and close your eyes.”

Snail oozed his way up the tree. Butterfly gathered friends willing to stay up past bedtime.

No light.
No heat.
Lark shivered.
Everyone slept.

Flash! Crash! Sizzle!
Sizzle?

Lark saw a bright spot.
She had to know more.

Lark tiptoed to the front of the cave.
Flash! Crash!
A fire!

Could Lark bring fire back to the cave?
Adventure time!

Lark grabbed a torch.
She was ready.

Lark walked and walked.
The bright spot lit the way.

Lark got closer.
Careful.
She lifted the torch.
Wait, wait. Sizzle.
Got it!

Lark hurried home.
She crouched near the fire pit.

The Dock

I sat on frozen ground for 7 months while white snow blanketed me.

Now, my family has returned to place me back in the fully thawed lake.

I’ll soon float on the freshwater with fish below and the warm sun above.

I hear Nikki’s voice, "Dad, hurry! Let's get it in the water!"

YES! Put me in!

Within minutes, people surround me.

"On the count of three, lift and push!" Dad says.

“One, two, three!”

WHOOSH!

I shiver as cold water rushes past my “legs.”

"It's in! Can I climb on?" asks Nikki.

"Go for it,” answers Dad.

"Jon! Carolyn! Last one in, is a rotten egg!"

“You’re all going to freeze!” Mom warns.

“Worth it!” Nikki declares.

Bang,

boom,

bang,

boom,

bang,

boom!

My boards bounce until…

SPLASH,

   SPLASH,

       SPLASH,

       with repeated shrieks, screams and laughter.

Nikki clings to me, “I’ve missed this.”

On a shimmering pond,
near a willow and oak.
From a lily pad patch
came a ribbit and croak.

A lonely frog searched
in the pond, on the ground.
For something he said,
he'd remember when found.

While frog's pals were joyful
and grateful for spring,
His mind swirled with castles,
a witch and a king.

Then one day he found it!
A crown for his head,
And rasping a croak, he said,
“Am I Prince Fred?”

As time passed, he’d gaze
at his rippled reflection,
And tried stitching thoughts,
But found no connection.

‘Till one night he wished
on a bright shooting star,

Blossom Day

Baba was tired of winter. She was SO EXCITED when the snow melted and the flowers bloomed.

First purple crocuses emerged, then sunny daffodils. Baba danced when soft cherry flowers appeared. She held the pink blossoms to her face and tossed them in the air.

Then something strange happened. The flowers kept blooming, choking the streets and barricading the sidewalks. Baba had to stay home.

The windows were blocked by petals and the door was plugged by fat blooms. Baba’s nose ran from allergies.

For the first time ever, school was called off for a blossom day.

Baba was surprised to find herself lonely and bored.

Sometimes, though, everything changes fast.

As Baba dreamed, an April ice storm blew in. It froze all the flowers, and when the sun melted them, they shrunk, opening the roads.

Baba happily walked through shriveled flowers to see her friends again.

Sky Wolves Nesting

An empty sky, awash with light, above the desert floor. A single hawk drifts far and high, a lonely carnivore.

Another sits alone atop a green saguaro crown. He calls aloud and stretches out his wings of copper brown.

He launches towards his chosen mate. They make a joyful pair. They soar and dive and circle down. They’re dancers in the air.

These feathered wolves are gathering. They’re building up their pack,
a hunting group that will increase the food they can bring back.

To help ensure survival of the nestlings coming soon, these raptors fly together in the desert afternoon.

And when the eggs have hatched, and when the little ones have grown,
they’ll help to raise their sibling clutch as if it were their own.

So, as she sits upon her nest, and sees her family soar, the matriarch is now content – a lonely bird no more.

Winter and spring
are having a fight.

I try to go fishing,
the water looks nice.

Sally and Lester heard the alarms and looked at each other.

They had just (egg)rolled into the Oval Office.

“Just when I thought we’d made it,” Lester sighed.

“We can eggsplain,” said Sally, as the plainclothesmen - eggsperts - surrounded them.

“We had a steam bath. Then a cool down. We emerged lemonade pink and limeylicious green and felt springy and decided to fly!”

“We eggxited while the roosters were shaking their tail feathers and the hens were watching a chick-flick.”

“We were eggsploring when we saw:

OVAL OFFICE - THIS WAY. We thought we’d fit in here.”

“Yes, we’re verrry oval-ly, you’ll notice.”

There was no eggscaping for the two Dixie chicks (they were from the south).

The plainclothesmen consulted. “Breaking in’s no yolk. We eggspelled some rotten eggs earlier…but good eggs can stay.”

And that’s how Sally and Lester joined the U.S. National Springtime Display.

“Jump!” exclaims Amelia.

Josie glances at the murky puddle, then down at her new boots. They are her favorite shade of red, so bright, they almost glow. Josie likes how the burst of color on her feet adds cheer to an otherwise dreary day.

“Jump!” Amelia repeats.

Josie inches closer to the puddle. She lifts one foot up, then slowly places it down in the water. She does the same with her other foot, careful not to splash on her boots. Josie rocks back and forth on the balls of her feet.

“Jump!” Amelia pleads.

She bunny hops through her puddle. Then, she stomps back. Amelia freezes when she sees the spatter on Josie’s formerly pristine boots.

Josie locks eyes with her little sister. She crouches down, and springs back up with all her might.

Josie lands with a giant splash. Amelia giggles, and Josie grins.

“Jump!” they shout together.

A Skunk’s Rainy Day

A raindrop hit Niko on his nose waking him up from his sleep.

Sleeping under his favorite patch of wildflowers on the forest floor seemed like the perfect spot but the rain managed to slip through the leaves.

As much as he didn’t care to get wet, the scent of the flowers in the rain was so sweet he found himself rooted to that spot listening to the rain.

Soon his stomach started to rumble, and he knew it was time to move on from the rain and find something yummy to snack on.

Niko loved the wildflower spot because it was not far from the perfect berry patch with the juiciest berries a skunk could ask for!

Even better yet, the berry patch was situated under a huge oak tree which made for a perfect umbrella from the rain. The best way to spend a rainy spring day!

The beach was ruff. In fact, it was doggone rocky.

Worst of all, when he paddled out, the lineup was wall-to-wall pooches.

Sundoggie was no kook, so he waited his turn.
(He’d been top dog at obedience school).

He waited while the beagle got barreled, the husky hung ten, and the collie carved.

Sundoggie was ready to hot dog, but when his wave arrived it was a real mushburger.

As Sundoggie surfed, wind whistled through his whiskers.
He tasted salt spray and felt the ocean roll.

Sundoggie chased his tail on the nose of his board.

The hounds hooted and howled.

Sundoggie grinned. It wasn’t the perfect trip, but he felt perfectly awesome.

Jamboree For Bear!

Bear didn’t answer.
